Doors open at new library, rec centre tomorrow

Just in time for March Break, Brampton is opening a new recreation centre and library in the northeast end of the city.

The Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library is officially open tomorrow (Wednesday), and programming will start with March Break activities Monday. The 35,000 square foot community centre has a gymnasium with bleacher seating, change rooms, a fitness room and large and medium sized program spaces for a variety of uses including rentals for birthday parties, small social events and meetings. The space will also be used to host new drop-in programs for youth, seniors and pre-schoolers that may include art classes, cooking and wellness classes, guitar lessons, spin classes and after-school programs.

The 35,000 square foot library has more bookable computer stations and portable computers than other branches and a computer lab for training and programming exercises. It also has individual and group study rooms. Outside, a reading garden offers a tranquil space to enjoy a book, there is a skateboard park, basketball courts and an accessible playground. Construction on a swimming pool and expanded fitness area will start in 2014, according to city officials.
