Doors open at new library, rec centre tomorrow
Just in time for March Break, Brampton is opening a new recreation centre and library in the northeast end of the city.
The Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library is officially open tomorrow (Wednesday), and programming will start with March Break activities Monday. The 35,000 square foot community centre has a gymnasium with bleacher seating, change rooms, a fitness room and large and medium sized program spaces for a variety of uses including rentals for birthday parties, small social events and meetings. The space will also be used to host new drop-in programs for youth, seniors and pre-schoolers that may include art classes, cooking and wellness classes, guitar lessons, spin classes and after-school programs.
The 35,000 square foot library has more bookable computer stations and portable computers than other branches and a computer lab for training and programming exercises. It also has individual and group study rooms. Outside, a reading garden offers a tranquil space to enjoy a book, there is a skateboard park, basketball courts and an accessible playground. Construction on a swimming pool and expanded fitness area will start in 2014, according to city officials.
Throughout March Break, there will be general interest courses offered daily at the centre, including a Girls Only Spa for six to 10 year olds, a Krafty Kids class, Wacky Board Games Drop-in, Bingo drop-in, Bollywood Dance for ages seven to 15 years, baking and cooking for kids up to 13 years, and sports drop-in programs for ages six all the way up to 18 years and older, in such sports as badminton, basketball, volleyball and soccer. A mother and daughter Try It for yoga, and Try It classes for zumba, spin and cardio games will also be offered through the week, along with full-day sports camps.
Gore Meadows Community Centre and Library is located at 10150 The Gore Rd., north of Castlemore Road. It is located on 240 acres of parkland that extends from The Gore Road to McVean Drive, with Castlemore Road serving as its southern border.
