Niagara College’s multi-million dollar transformation of the Welland Campus was recognized last night with a Niagara Design Award.

Niagara College was recognized in the Large Scale Project category for the Welland Campus expansion that added six new and expanded buildings, transformed the campus grounds and added new roadways and linkages. The project was completed in 2011. Judges said the project “has dramatically transformed the campus. (The) development was noted for its use of the available space in a manner that blends with the existing buildings and flow of the campus, while also reaching out to the nearby surroundings.”

Currently in its eighth year, the Niagara Community Design Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in design in the Niagara Region that demonstrates the application of Smart Growth Principles.

Launched in 2007, the redevelopment of the Welland Campus was part of Niagara College’s overall $90 million master plan, which also included new and expanded facilities at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. The Welland Campus redevelopment included a new Athletic Wing and Student Centre, an expanded academic wing and technology centre, a learning commons and the Applied Health Institute. “The redevelopment of the Welland Campus was driven by a need to create state-of-the-art facilities that accommodate our growing enrolments, and expand capacity in program areas that support key industries in Niagara and beyond,” said Teresa Quinlin, Niagara College’s vice president of Corporate Services. “We’re very proud to have developed one of the most leading-edge learning environments in Ontario’s college system.” The Welland Campus redevelopment was designed by architects Tillman Ruth Robinson Inc., and constructed by Aquicon Construction.

This is the third element of Niagara College’s master plan project to receive recognition. The Wine Visitor + Education Centre a the Welland Campus received the 2009 Niagara Design Architecture Award, and the Landscape Plan for the Welland Campus received a Niagara Design Award in 2010.
