Located in the bustling downtown area of Hamilton, Ontario, the newly constructed Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre links together surrounding structures to create a complete recreation program for the City’s residents. The building program features active program spaces such as dance studios, a walking track, gymnasium, leisure pools, an outdoor splash pad & ice-skating area, as well as open public community rooms for the local residents and seniors.
The BMRC also connects the existing Jimmy Thompson Pool building through a two-story public lobby space spanning the south side of the BMRC building. The facilities also featured energy efficient technology including radiant in-floor heating, heat recovery, and other mechanical and electrical efficiencies. Built on a greenfield site, site preparation work and services included hydro, gas, water, sewer, roadways, parking, landscaping, storm water management, etc.
Special features included barrier-free accessibility throughout the facility, a new connection to the existing Jimmy Thompson Pool, with elevator and barrier free restrooms, and selective renovations and upgrades to the existing Jimmy Thompson Pool.
