The Hazel McCallion Central Library renovation and expansion transformed one of Mississauga’s most prominent civic buildings into a contemporary, technology-enabled public destination in the heart of the City Centre. Delivered by Aquicon as Construction Manager, the project involved major interior renovations across all five floors of the existing library, together with a new 10,000 sf. fourth-floor glass-box addition overlooking Celebration Square. The renewed facility now includes flexible event areas, exhibition spaces, bookable meeting rooms, teen and family zones, a library café, a municipal business enterprise centre, and a digital hub, all organized within a brighter and more open interior environment.

A key complexity of the project was the scale of intervention within a 30-year-old public building, requiring careful integration of new construction with existing structure and systems. Central to the renewal was the reworking of the library’s atrium spaces and the removal of interior barriers to create stronger visual connections and improved circulation between floors. The project also included substantial upgrades to the building’s lighting, HVAC, power distribution, and connectivity systems to support modern library use and improve overall building performance. Located adjacent to Celebration Square in one of Mississauga’s busiest civic districts, the work also demanded disciplined site logistics, delivery coordination, and safety management throughout construction.
